Villeta · Cundinamarca
Villeta, the Sweet Town
History, panela-making tradition, warm weather all year and plenty to discover, just two hours from Bogotá.
Its history
Five centuries of sugarcane, roads and rest
1551
Founded in the Villeta river valley
Villeta was born in colonial times, in a warm, fertile valley surrounded by mountains, on the banks of the river that bears its name.
Colonial era
A stop on the Camino Real
The royal road linking Santa Fe de Bogotá with the river port of Honda, on the Magdalena, ran through here. Muleteers, travelers and mule trains stopped in Villeta to rest after the long descent from the high plateau.
18th to 20th century
The land of panela
Sugarcane found its home here. Sugar mills (trapiches) spread across the countryside and panela became the town’s livelihood and pride, hence its name, “Colombia’s Sweet Town”.
Since the 19th century
Bogotá’s warm getaway
Its steady climate and closeness made it the favorite escape from the capital’s cold. Country houses, swimming spots and the town’s easygoing life still draw visitors today.
Tradition
Colombia’s Sweet Town
In Villeta’s trapiches, cane is still crushed, the juice is boiled in large pans and panela is shaped by hand, just as it has been for generations. Visiting one means tasting fresh panela and understanding why this sweet defines the town.
Every year, around January, the town celebrates the National Panela Pageant (Reinado Nacional de la Panela), its most traditional festival, with parades, music and dancers filling the streets.
